Dear milongueros of the world,
Tonight at 7 pm Ricardo Vidort, one of the legends of tango from Argentina passed away in Santa Fe, NM. He was surrounded by people
who loved and respected him for who he was and what he brought to tango.
May he rest in peace after all he went through with cancer.
We loved him dearly and miss him very much.

Subject: Ricardo Vidort
Dearest friends of tango,
It is with great sorrow that I must inform you of the passing of one of our great legends of Tango-Ricardo Vidort...We were blessed to have him as a member of our Tango Community for the last year of his life. He will be remembered and missed as a master and a gentleman!
Unfortunately , as sometimes happens, masters who dedicate their lives to their art often die with little or no means to pay medical and funeral expenses. I am asking that we, as a Tango Community, unite and contribute all we possibly can to help.
Tomorrow, at Tuesday’s Milonga at El Meson, we will be having a memorial fundraiser. Please donate all you possibly can! We will accept checks or cash. If you cannot make it to tomorrow’s Milonga, please send a check to:

I am so saddened by the loss of another of the last of the great milongueros--ones with a unique dance, who lived to dance, and had a special use of space and time. He was, like the handful of other milongueros, a living connection to the golden era, and a legend within the tango world. I am grateful that I got a chance to know him and dance with him many times in Buenos Aires, and I am so glad I had the chance to bring him to Atlanta last year so that others could see and experience this remarkable dancer.
I went to see him in December during my last trip to Buenos Aires. We had a good chat and though I knew he wasn't well--the cancer was taking its toll--he was still full of plans, still had a smile and a dance to give. He told me once..."I don't' know what I'd do without tango by my side..."

The first time I met Ricardo Vidort was in New York City at a Milonga across the street from New York Penn Central Station. The Milonga was called L'Estacion and it was hosted by a Milonguera who was Reba Perez. I watched Ricardo dance. We both left early. It was a cold night.
My teacher in Atlanta, Barbara Durr, had recommended Ricardo to me for private lessons but I never pursued that opportunity. Evidently, Ricardo was one of the few true Milongueros who was available in New York for private lessons.
The next time I ran across Ricardo I was visiting Buenos Aires at an afternoon Milonga. I had just met and fallen in love with a remarkable spirited Argentine woman who was one of Ricardo's favorite partners. After the Milonga we went to a Parrilla and talked about Tango, Milongueros y el codigo.
The next day I scheduled my first private lesson with Ricardo. I danced the best I could. He said that I danced with "cadencia." I wasn't sure what that meant but it sounded positive. He said that all you have to do is dance with feeling. Hear the music. Dance with feeling. Find your own dance. Find your own special signature. At the time I was wanting more for my money.
Then he says, "No one can teach you to dance the Tango. You have to discover the Tango for yourself. No one teaches you how to make love. You discover that feeling for yourself."
Years later I caught up with Ricardo at the Tango Festival in Denver, Colorado. He danced in his own style. He was the best dressed man in the room. But what impressed me most was that he was a working Milonguero as my friends from Phoenix will attest.
I admired his energy and his drive and wondered if I could be doing half as well as he was when I got to be his age. Amazing!
The last time I saw him was when he came to Atlanta last year. In his classes he kept talking about feelings. Siempre sentimientos! From time-to-time Barbara would try to steer him back on task but he paid little attention to her. He just wanted people to know and to understand that you dance tango with your heart and soul and body, not with your head. Dance with feelings and with cadencia! That's all that matters.
Homenaje for Ricardo Vidort in Buenos Aires

I propose that every DJ in every milonga in the world pay tribute this week to Ricardo Vidort by playing a tanda of Pedro Laurenz, his favorite orchestra.
